PADI Freedive Instructor Courses
The PADI range of Freediver Programmes launched in 2015 and were developed and tested at Saltfree. The programme consists of four levels of training – PADI Freediver (incorporating PADI Basic Freediver – a try freediving experience), PADI Advanced Freediver, PADI Master Freediver and PADI Freedive Instructor.
As a long established freedive instructor, a PADI Course Director for more than ten years, a major contributor to the development of the PADI programmes, an AIDA Freedive Instructor Trainer since 2003, and a qualified teacher, Sam Amps is well placed to help you become a PADI Freedive Instructor. Our PADI Freedive Instructor programmes cater for anyone who is currently a freedive instructor with another agency such as AIDA, RAID or SSI, PADI Scuba Instructors who would like to teach freediving, and experienced freedivers who would like to get into teaching.
If you are already a Freedive Instructor and would like to become a PADI Freedive Instructor, a crossover scheme is available. To find out more, visit our PADI Freedive Instructor Crossover Courses page.
If you do not yet have a freedive teaching qualification, you will need to complete the full PADI Freedive Instructor Course. To enrol on this you must hold PADI Master Freediver or a similar certification such as AIDA 4 Star Freediver, be at least 18 years old, be a current First Aid Instructor (we can help with this – visit our EFR Page) and a have a fit-to-dive medical signed by a physician within the last 12 months. To find yourself comfortable on this course, you should be able to freedive to at least 30m Constant Weight (with fins), have a Static Apnea breath hold of at least 3 minutes and Dynamic Apnea with Fins of at least 75m. You will also need all your own freedive kit including a Safety Lanyard and a freediving computer.
The PADI Freedive Instructor Training Course runs over 4 quite busy days, usually over 2 weekends with some home study beforehand. The course includes:
- Developing demonstration quality freediving skills in Static Apnea, Dynamic Apnea, Constant Weight Freediving and Freedive Rescues
- A thorough introduction to concepts of learning and instruction
- A full overview of the PADI Freediving Courses – what’s included, how to set them up, the standards you need to stick to and the practicalities of teaching them
- Safety and Risk Management – knowledge and techniques
- Advanced Freediving Physiology and Psychology
- Organising and Marketing Freediving Programmes
- Caring for the Environment as a Freedive Instructor
You will take part in classroom teaching sessions (as student and instructor), confined water workshops, open water workshops and get plenty of chance to develop your skills in teaching and managing freediving courses. If you live locally, we will also give you opportunities to shadow our instructors or team teach with us to help you gain experience. If not, we may be able to refer you to other schools who can help with the same.
The price of the PADI Instructor Course is £850 plus your PADI Application fee (c £75 payable to PADI).
Our next PADI Freedive Instructor Course runs over two weekends in Spring 2017 – most likely early Feb and late March. We haven’t set dates yet but will do so when we have a couple of people ready to take the course. Please let us know if you are interested by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org Our courses run at the National Diving and Activity Centre in Chepstow with pool and classroom time in nearby Thornbury.
You will also need to complete an EFR Instructor Course if you are not already a First Aid Instructor. We can help organise that for you.
If you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you. Do drop us an email and we can either mail you back or give you a call to have a chat about your options.
